New docks underway at Alameda’s Ballena Isle Marina
ALAMEDA – An extensive upgrade and reconfiguration of Alameda’s Ballena Isle Marina has begun with the first phase of installation of new modular, composite-material, environmentally-friendly docks at the East Bay marina that’s tucked into a naturally protected harbor along the east shore of San Francisco Bay.
The $2.5 million project is now underway, with the initial phase scheduled for completion next month. Subsequent phases will continue throughout this year and into 2019.
At full completion, Ballena Isle Marina will boast a total of 430 slips.
Currently a 500-slip marina, Ballena Isle will be reconfigured to include at least 30 slips large enough to accommodate vessels of up to 120 feet in length and longer.
The project’s dock fabricator and supplier, Hawaii-based Bluewater Marine, ranks high among the world’s dock manufacturers having completed major marina projects throughout Hawaii, the Pacific Rim and Southeast Asia. The consulting firm of Halgren & Associates, based in Seattle, is coordinating the installation process.
“Our valued boaters and their guests deserve the finest state-of-the-art quality in docks and related dockside amenities, and we’re grateful for their patience and understanding through this major upgrade, to be phased with minimal disruptions in usage and service,” said Kate Pearson, West Coast vice president at Safe Harbor Marinas, owner/operator of Ballena Isle.
“Our shared vision is that Ballena Isle will rank among the finest and most welcoming marinas for our full-time boaters and those traveling along the West Coast cruising corridor.”
According to Pearson, all regulatory permitting has been obtained from the appropriate agencies, including the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, and the City of Alameda.
